This Renaissance building reflects the distinctive characteristics of the architecture of that time in Burgos: elegant, sober, and monumental.

The land on which the palace was built originally belonged to the Colonia family, well-known merchants and architects responsible for other important constructions in the city. In 1550, merchant Nicolás de Gauna commissioned the construction of the palace to Juan de Vallejo and Juan de Aras, who shaped this majestic residence.

From merchants’ residence to noble house

The palace has witnessed a rich history over the centuries, passing from hand to hand and leaving an indelible mark on the city. In 1565, merchant Andrés de Maluenda turned it into his home, a noble refuge for his family. Later, in the 17th century, the property was associated with the Brizuela family, who lived there and made it famous as the House of the Brizuela Family.

At the end of the 18th century, Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán, a distinguished military figure, made the palace his residence. However, its history took a turn when the Marquis of Castrofuerte, Heliodoro Jalón, acquired it and transformed it into a modern dwelling, adapting it to the needs of the time. It was in 1920 when the Counts of Castilfalé purchased the building and, with their innovative vision, remodeled it in the postmodern style, which still shines on its façade.

The Municipal Archive

Today, Castilfalé Palace houses the Municipal Archive of Burgos, an institution that preserves and manages the city’s historical documents. Although the building’s function has changed, its historical importance remains intact. Walking through its halls, visitors can imagine how noble families of the time lived, surrounded by luxury and art.

The Municipal Archive offers a unique opportunity for those interested in Burgos’ history, as it holds valuable documents and records that tell the story of the city’s evolution over the centuries.

Practical information

The Castilfalé Palace, as we know it today, was built in the mid-16th century, during a period when Burgos experienced economic prosperity thanks to trade.
