Gate of Santa María

Upon approaching, you’ll be greeted by the majestic figures of Emperor Charles V and the legendary Cid Campeador, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. These characters, alongside other notable Castilian figures like the Judges of Castile or the founder of Burgos, symbolize the profound historical legacy of Burgos. As you walk under the gate, you’ll feel a connection to the glorious past of the city, recalling its crucial role in Castile’s history.

A journey through the centuries

But the Gate ofSanta María is not only a marvel to admire from the outside. Its interior hosts a series of spaces inviting you to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the city. In past times, this gate served as the headquarters of the Burgos City Council and the Provincial Museum, and today it remains an active cultural space offering temporary exhibitions that allow visitors to connect with the past of Burgos.

One of the most interesting spaces within the gate is the Poridad Room, also known as the Secret Room. This room, under an impressive Mudéjar-style ceiling, houses objects linked to the legend of El Cid, including one of his bones. This unique relic, displayed within a historical context, strengthens the bond between this monument and the figure of El Cid, which remains present in the city’s collective memory.

You cannot miss the monumental Vela Zanetti mural presiding over the central hall. This Burgos-born artist left his mark with this piece, which stands as a testament to the art and culture of the city.

The Pharmacy Museum: a link between past and present

Another fascinating corner of the Gate ofSanta María is the Pharmacy Museum, located on its upper floor. Climbing a narrow spiral staircase, you can access this museum, which houses historical pieces from the former hospital of San Juan. This small but interesting museum offers a glimpse into the evolution of pharmacy over the centuries, with tools and containers that transport us to an era when medicine was almost an art.

Practical Information

Exhibition Room:

• Tuesday to Saturday: From 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
• Sundays: From 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
• Mondays and public holidays: Closed.

Visitors can also access, free of charge and during the same opening hours (as long as there is daylight, since there is no artificial lighting), a turret offering views of the Espolón Promenade and the Santa María Bridge.
